BARON VON SKARIN

This dangerous Bavarian baron is one of S.C.U.M.'s most senior operatives. Often dealing directly with Scumlord himself, von Skarin is a slimy sycophant where he thinks there's something to be gained - but utterly callous when there's nothing to lose. Already extremely wealthy, he's up to his neck in all manner of unpleasantness, but takes care never to leave any proof of his involvement, contracting out his dirty work to the likes of Jaws and Nick Nack or, in an emergency, his vicious hound, Schnitzel. Totally unscrupulous, the backstabbing Baron is not averse to double-crossing even those who are ostensibly on his side. Fortunately, his high opinion of himself often results in complacency, and thus his undoing.

Despite being the last of the chief villains to be introduced in the episode running order (unless one counts Tiara Hotstones), Baron von Skarin is among the most frequently used head crooks in the franchise, clocking up an impressive tally of appearances later in the series, spanning some of the best episodes (Live and Let's Dance) and the worst (Sherlock I.Q.). Despite his caricatured accent, and although his character is occasionally played for laughs (Scottish Mist) he's generally one of the more serious of the villains, particularly when compared to the likes of Dr Derange and Captain Plank. He's perhaps best remembered for his capacity for bickering with other key crooks, particularly in the spiral of mutual loathing and backstabbing he shares with Tiara Hotstones (Dance of the Toreadors, Rubies aren't Forever), but also Ms. Fortune (Indian Summer) and Goldfinger (Homeward Bound). Of the henchmen, he's most likely to be seen supported by Jaws, with or without Nick Nack, although Spoiler has been known to work for him too.
